The Importance of Voicework

I grew up a small kid. Like one of those who didn’t break 5 feet until 10th grade.

But like any other person growing up, I always wanted to play with the big kids. I wanted to play football, be part of a team, just be included in the world around me.

Throughout childhood and well into high school, I felt unheard, even bullied, and most certainly “looked over.” That was me on a physical level, the image of me others would see.

But what they heard was a whole different story.

Because I had a gift of language, of expression, of communication and articulation. I had the gift of being able to speak up. Whether for myself, for an idea or an opinion, or for a necessity that transcended my individuality and represented the lives of those around me.

My gift of language became a tool. A tool I used to stand up for myself, to assist someone who needed help, and to express and defend my contributions to social situations.

My gift of language got me through adolescence, through physical, social, and emotional development, and through high school. It became my calling card, my personality and purpose –– the full spectrum of me as an individual.

So when I trained to be an actor in college, I was immediately drawn to voice work. The manifestation of what had always been my natural resource and “tool” became my passion. (And on a side note, I actually did my best acting in voice class.)

The simple truth is that voice class helped me get out of my head and back into my body… On my terms. Precisely by finding a context where I could be fierce and vulnerable at the same time, I learned the essential and time-tested techniques that connect and express my inner voice.

But learning those techniques in voice class was only half the story.

Because today I teach voice and share it boldly.

The benefits are infinite and immeasurable. But just a few right upfront are freedom, confidence, clarity, and feeling grounded in your truth.

Imagine creating emotional regulation and resolution. Imagine living a life where you don’t leave things intentionally unsaid or subconsciously repressed.

But there’s even more. Imagine living a full version of your own potential. Imagine a natural commitment to a life of purpose. Your life. Your purpose.

It begins with your voice… Just like it did for me.
